On a pleasant summer evening, I hopped on the F train to the Lena Horne Bandshell at Prospect Park to witness Adrian Quesada’s Boleros Psicodélicos. I remember him as a driving force behind Black Pumas, whose Austin City Limits set a couple of years ago still lingers in my memory. But Quesada’s new project proved even more powerful, blending his signature sound with an all-female lineup that made the evening unforgettable.

The night kicked off with Trish Toledo, opening the show with her reinvention of classic ’60s pop and soul. Watching her warm up the crowd was a reminder of why she’s celebrated: her voice is heartfelt, rich, and full of life. Before long, she was back on stage with Quesada’s band, helping launch the night into something almost magical—a psychedelic journey that twisted and swirled with energy. You can catch a clip from that emotive performance now on our YouTube Channel.

Natalia Clavier followed, bringing her Argentine roots into the mix with a soulful blend of jazz, electronica, and Latin rhythms. Her performance, rich and introspective, carried the audience through ambient soundscapes that felt both modern and timeless.

iLe, born Ileana Cabra Joglar, took the stage next. The Puerto Rican singer-songwriter, formerly of Calle 13, infused the music with her signature fusion of Latin, jazz, and traditional Puerto Rican rhythms. Her voice was at once sweet, spontaneous, and electrifying, elevating the energy of Quesada’s boleros to new heights.

Angélica Garcia brought her own energy to the mix. The Los Angeles-born singer-songwriter of Mexican and Salvadoran roots delivered her bilingual lyrics and experimental soundscapes with precision and soul. Her 2024 album Gemelo was alive on stage, exploring identity and healing in ways that felt intimate and expansive at the same time.

And then, just when I thought the night couldn’t get any higher, Mireya Ramos closed the set. The Latin Grammy-winning vocalist, violinist, composer, and founder of New York City’s first all-female mariachi band, Flor de Toloache, fused mariachi, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop into a finale that left everyone stunned.

AN EVENING TO REMEMEBER

I came expecting a Quesada gig, and what I got was five powerful female voices, impossible to ignore, coming together to create something unforgettable. The energy, the talent, the spontaneity—it’s one of those nights that sticks with you long after the last note fades. Relive part of this incredible evening now on our YouTube channel.
