Just a few days left until the 32nd edition of the Barcelona Independent Film Festival, L’Alternativa, kicks off — a celebration of creative freedom and innovation. From November 13 to 23, the Catalan capital will host a series of screenings and in-person activities.

Once again, L’Alternativa, Barcelona’s Independent Film Festival, promises to fill the city with independent cinema, creativity, and experimentation. The 32nd edition invites audiences to question cinema as we know it — fostering collective reflection, dialogue between filmmakers and viewers, and a celebration of the cinematic art in all its forms.

This year’s opening film, El mensaje by Argentine director Iván Fund, will inaugurate the festival on Thursday, November 13, at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB). The poetic and sensory feature explores the invisible connections between the everyday and the transcendental, establishing Fund as one of the most sensitive voices in contemporary Latin American cinema. After the screening, the CCCB Hall will host the opening party — a lively evening with music, drinks, and dancing — the perfect meeting point for film lovers.

Among the most anticipated screenings are Una película de miedo, by Sergio Oksman — a clever reflection on the act of filmmaking itself and the thin line between reality and fiction — followed by Volver a casa tan tarde, by Celia Viada, an intimate and moving portrait of family memory and the return to one’s roots. Both films will be shown on Saturday, November 15, accompanied by Q&A sessions with their directors.

That same day, the CCCB Hall will also be the stage for the 20th-anniversary celebration of Catalunya Film Festivals, featuring a live performance by electronic music artist Golden Bug, one of the most vibrant names in Barcelona’s current scene.

This edition will also feature prominent international guests such as Theo Anthony, author of the documentary All Light, Everywhere, who will give a masterclass on the relationship between image, power, and surveillance, and Lizzie Borden, the U.S. filmmaker behind the groundbreaking Born in Flames (1983).

In addition, the festival will host creation workshops for children and adults, filmmaker talks, and the free-entry L’Alternativa Hall, dedicated this year to the theme of the “Body”, as well as Cinema Pendent, the professional program supporting the development of new audiovisual projects.
