MAC DEMARCO
ALBUM PREVIEW
Mac DeMarco’s “Guitar” Feels Like Coming Home
Rockaway, Queens — New York City. The adopted home of Canadian artist Mac DeMarco, who has dedicated so many songs to, and drawn endless inspiration from, this city.
There’s one place I love most in New York City—especially in the fall. Rockaway. The beach, the water, the air, the quiet sound of waves meeting land. It’s the kind of space where everything makes sense, where I feel fully myself. And now, listening to “Home,” the new track from Mac DeMarco’s upcoming album Guitar (out August 21), I’m reminded why DeMarco has always felt like the soundtrack to these moments.
Mac DeMarco is that guy. The boy who never quite grew up, who still sings like he’s talking to his worried mom in the kitchen. The same guy who, in the middle of a packed Primavera Sound set, stops everything to replace his guitar cable—and somehow makes the whole thing feel even more intimate (it was 2015, I still remember that). He doesn’t really care what people expect. And that’s his magic.
“Home” feels like a letter left on your kitchen table. Lo-fi, warm, loose, and unapologetically Mac. It doesn’t try hard, and that’s exactly why it hits so deep. There’s something about it that captures the spirit of New York in the '70s—the old-school rebel energy. Not so much in the sound, but in the spirit, which says: This is the place—the only place in the world, maybe—where I can do whatever I want. Nobody cares. I am who I am.
It’s the kind of energy that pulls in artists from all over the world just to create and be. That same energy that made me fall in love with the city in the first place.

I’m really looking forward to the full release of Guitar. Not because I expect some grand evolution or surprise—but because I know it won’t disappoint. Mac DeMarco gives us music like a friend showing up at your door. Casual, familiar, and always honest.
