Enfants: Japanese Alt-Rock with Depth and Drive
Japanese alt-rock band Enfants made their U.S. debut at SXSW 2025, and we caught up with them just after their show for this full-length exclusive interview. Pronounced “Anfan,” the band name means "children" in French—a word that reflects their playful yet emotionally intense approach to rock music. Since launching their live career in 2022, Enfants has become one of the most talked-about new bands in Japan, thanks to their viral single “Play” and memorable appearances at major festivals like SUMMER SONIC 2024.
In this conversation, the four band members open up about what it’s like to play for an American audience, how cultural differences shape their performances, and how the experience in Austin is already feeding into new music they’ll start recording later this week. Frontman Dai Matsumoto talks about his creative process, blending personal struggles with empathy and emotional honesty, and why performing abroad is vital to their growth as artists.
They also reflect on their name, the meaning of “cool,” and the importance of staying curious and collaborative. With influences ranging from Radiohead to Nirvana, Enfants is carving out their own space in the global alt-rock scene—one raw lyric and trembled note at a time.
