FAI LACI: THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
Fai Laci have spent the past year building their identity on the road. After playing around 70 shows in 2026, living together, and developing their sound through constant touring, the five-piece arrived at ACL Festival with a debut album and a growing sense of what they want their music to represent.
Recorded during ACL Festival 2026, this conversation, conducted by TMN founder Pablo Herrera, explores the band’s beginnings, their transition into full-time music, the ideas behind The Elephant in the Room, and how touring has shaped both their creative process and their relationship with one another.
The band recalls how “Five,” originally released by Luke before the full group existed, began gaining traction without promotion. That momentum eventually led to the manager, Brian Schwarz, who helped connect them with Easy Eye Sound and Dan Auerbach. For a band already influenced by The Black Keys, the opportunity became a major turning point and led to recording in Nashville.
Fai Laci also discuss the meaning behind The Elephant in the Room. The title makes reference to the broader feeling that something in contemporary life is increasingly difficult to ignore. Their songs and live shows respond to that uncertainty by emphasizing human connection, shared experiences, and the value of being together in person.
That idea leads into a broader conversation about artificial intelligence and creativity. The band speaks openly about its concerns over AI-generated music and the possibility of creative work becoming detached from human effort. For them, spending hours writing, practicing, debating ideas, and struggling through the process is part of what gives music meaning.
Their songwriting tells that philosophy. Songs can begin with one member, a pair of collaborators, a full-band jam, or an unfinished idea brought into the room. With five people contributing different perspectives, reaching a final decision can take time, but the band sees that tension as part of the process.
The band also shares the particularities of touring: long drives, irregular sleep, inconsistent meals, and the emotional contrast between playing major festivals and smaller rooms only days apart. Fai Laci explain how communication, humor, and learning to resolve disagreements have become essential to keeping the band healthy and sustainable.
