Swapmeet: We haven't growing up yet
Swapmeet talk about growing up together through music, building a band from high school friendships, and learning how to perform naturally through years of playing live shows.
In this conversation, the Australian band reflects on their experience performing at SXSW in Texas and the energy of playing in front of American audiences for the first time. They speak about the atmosphere around the festival, the connection between live music and community, and the excitement of bringing their music outside Australia.
The members of Swapmeet also share how the project first came together during their school years in Adelaide. From casual jam sessions and high school parties to touring internationally, the band explains how their personal relationships shaped the chemistry of the group and helped maintain a sense of fun despite taking the project seriously as professionals.
The conversation moves through the transition from playing together as teenagers to operating as a professional band over the last two years. They discuss working with their label Winspear, staying focused on their own creative direction, and avoiding distractions from trends or expectations around them.
Swapmeet also taks about their songwriting process, where lyrics, melodies, and arrangements develop collaboratively through rehearsals and live performance. The band reflects on how constantly playing shows helped shape their stage presence organically over time.
Towards the end, they speak about upcoming travel plans, hopes of returning to the United States, and continuing to grow internationally as a band. After releasing their debut extended play Oxalis in 2024, they became the first international artist signed to Los Angeles based record label Winspear. They will release their debut studio album, Mount Zero, in July 2026.
Swapmeet is Venus O'Broin (lead vocals/guitar), Maxwell Elphick (guitar/drums/vocals), Jack Medlyn (guitar/drums/vocals), and Joshua Doherty (bass).
