The Eric Byrd Trio: Keeping the Soul of Jazz Alive

This summer at the DC Jazz Festival 2025 in Washington, D.C., TMN connected with TheEric Byrd Trio — a band that has been crafting jazz together for over two decades. Known for their powerful chemistry, pianist Eric Byrd, drummer Alfonso Young Jr., and bassist Bhagwan Khalsa just released their latest album, Echoes of Arrival, continuing a legacy of 11 records that bridge tradition and innovation.

In our exclusive sit-down, the trio opened up about their philosophy: “Jazz… the best of jazz is how do I play something that makes everybody else sound good?” It’s not about ego, they said, but about listening, negotiating space, and supporting each other musically.

They also shared the story of their beginnings — from playing in middle school and church bands to developing a sound that now fills festival stages. Their advice to young creators resonates with TMN’s mission: “Stay as musically active as you can. Just always try to stay active.”

With influences ranging from Herbie Hancock to Miles Davis, the Eric Byrd Trio is proof that jazz remains a living, evolving art. Their presence at DC Jazz Fest shows how music connects generations and continues to inspire.
