What Makes a Great Photography Team?

In this episode of TMN Creative Thinking, Benedict Jones, a photography crew chief at SXSW, discusses festival photography, teamwork, professional development and the challenges of building a creative career.

Throughout the conversation, Benedict explains what it takes to coordinate photographic coverage at a major international festival. From recruiting photographers and organizing assignments to managing schedules and preparing teams for different types of events, he shares the responsibilities behind documenting SXSW and the importance of understanding the professional expectations of event photography.

Benedict also reflects on his journey from volunteering with the SXSW photography crew to becoming one of its crew chiefs. After more than a decade with the team, he discusses how self-doubt, practice and learning from experienced photographers helped him develop his skills. He also explains why collaboration and sharing knowledge are essential to building a strong creative community.

The conversation explores the technical and creative challenges of photography, including the workshops Benedict leads for the SXSW crew. He shares practical advice on camera settings, concert photography, experimenting with film and understanding the difference between taking a photograph you personally enjoy and creating an image that meets professional editorial requirements.

Benedict also offers advice to emerging photographers about developing their own interests, embracing mistakes and recognizing the effort behind creative work. He reflects on the less glamorous aspects of photography and why perseverance, curiosity and a willingness to keep learning matter more than immediate success.

Toward the end of the interview, Benedict shares a personal perspective on resilience, living with a disability and finding the motivation to keep creating. His advice emphasizes patience, helping others and finding purpose in what we do each day.

The interview was conducted by TMN at SXSW 2025 in Austin, Texas.
