Brooklyn Celebrates Aaliyah at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!

On August 8, Brooklyn came together at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park for BRIC Celebrates Aaliyah: One in a Million, a celebration of the life, music and lasting influence of Aaliyah.

Teens Media Network was there as part of our ongoing coverage of music and cultural life in Brooklyn and New York City. TMN founder and photographer Pablo Herrera documented the event through photography and video, capturing the performances, the audience and the atmosphere surrounding one of the summer’s most anticipated celebrations at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn!
Presented by BRIC, One in a Million brought Aaliyah’s music back to the stage through live performances, DJs and testimonials, with Taja Cheek (L’Rain) serving as music director. The lineup included Res, serpentwithfeet, Halima, Anajah, Motherboard and Tariq Al-Sabir, alongside a full live band.
Throughout the afternoon, Prospect Park became a celebration of Aaliyah’s continuing influence. Fans sang along, danced and arrived in Aaliyah-inspired looks, bringing together people who grew up with her music and younger audiences discovering and carrying that legacy forward.

Aaliyah, Still One in a Million
More than two decades after her death, the response in Prospect Park showed how strongly Aaliyah’s music and cultural influence continue to resonate across generations.
