AUSTIN | By Aja Haywood

SXSW returns to Austin this year, once again bringing together filmmakers, technologists, musicians, and creatives from around the world. For nine days, the city transforms into a global meeting point where conversations about film, technology, music, and storytelling unfold across theaters, conference halls, and venues throughout downtown Austin.

Covering the festival with TMN offers a unique opportunity to explore how these different creative worlds intersect.

This year marks my second time covering SXSW with TMN, and possibly my last. Looking back at my first experience attending the festival, I feel proud of how much that moment helped shape my confidence as a storyteller. Being surrounded by filmmakers, artists, and creators from around the world encouraged me to pursue journalism and multimedia storytelling more seriously.

Returning to SXSW in 2026 feels like stepping back into a creative laboratory where new ideas about art, media, and technology collide.

Film Premieres to Watch

Among the many premieres scheduled during the festival, several films already stand out.

One of the most anticipated screenings is I Love Boosters, directed by Boots Riley and premiering at the Paramount Theatre. The film features a cast that includes Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu, Eiza González, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, and Demi Moore.

The story follows a group of professional shoplifters who target a powerful fashion mogul. Riley is known for blending social commentary with bold visual storytelling, and this premiere promises to continue that creative approach.

Another film drawing attention is Dead Eyes, directed by Richard E. Williams and screening at the Alamo Drafthouse Lamar.

The first person horror film follows Sean and his fiancée Grace as they travel into a remote forest searching for Sean’s missing father. Their investigation uncovers disturbing experiments meant to resurrect Sean’s deceased sister. Soon the forest becomes home to terrifying clones fighting to prove who the “real” Lilly is.

Although horror films sometimes challenge my comfort level, the premise of this world premiere makes it one of the films I am most curious to experience during the festival.

Beyond Film

While film premieres are a central part of SXSW, the festival also creates space for conversations about the future of media, technology, and creative industries.

One topic drawing particular attention this year is artificial intelligence. Panels and discussions across the conference explore how AI may influence filmmaking, storytelling, and the broader media landscape.

As a journalist and content creator, I am interested in exploring how these technologies intersect with human creativity. Through interviews and conversations with filmmakers, technologists, and creators attending the festival, I hope to better understand how emerging tools are shaping the future of storytelling.

Looking Ahead

Attending SXSW provides a rare opportunity to observe how artists, technologists, and creators from different industries exchange ideas and inspire one another.

Through my coverage for TMN, I look forward to documenting these conversations and sharing the stories, films, and creative voices that are shaping the future of media and storytelling.
