Covering SXSW EDU: Exploring Innovation, Education, and Media

Aja Haywood, Lilibeth Dooley and TMN’s Founder and CEO Pablo Herrera at SXSW EDU 2025.

Hello, my name is Aja Haywood, and I had the incredible opportunity to cover the South by Southwest Educational Conference (SXSW EDU) in Austin, Texas, with a press pass on behalf of TMN. Attending as a media representative gave me access to industry leaders, groundbreaking discussions, and behind-the-scenes insights into the future of education. As someone passionate about learning, technology, and media, this event was a fascinating space to explore innovative ideas, meet inspiring individuals, and engage in thought-provoking conversations.

Meeting Ricky, Co-Founder of Amped ARTS

One of the highlights of my experience at SXSW EDU was conducting my first interview with TMN, speaking with Ricky Kradolfer from Amped Arts. We had an insightful discussion about music education for youth and the importance of integrating music into learning. Ricky shared how Amped Arts is using interactive tools to engage students, making music education more accessible and immersive. It was inspiring to see how technology can foster creativity and self-expression in young learners.

I invite you to watch the full interview below to learn more about the exciting work Amped Arts is doing doing.

Shilpi Agarwal, Founder of STEAM IN AI

Later, I had an engaging conversation with Shilpi Agarwal Founder of STEAM in AI about the ethical use of AI. We discussed the potential benefits and risks of AI in education, touching on topics like data privacy, bias in algorithms, and the importance of responsible AI development. It was refreshing to hear diverse perspectives on how technology is shaping the future of learning. Shilpi’s mission is to empower youth to shape the future of ethical AI use, using their voices to advocate for policies that address its risks.

I wrote a piece about AI ethics that you can read here.

AI Conversation with Fabian DeLeon

Another insightful discussion I had was with Fabian Deleon, Senior Social Media & PR Strategist at CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology) whom I met while lounging in the press room. We explored the intersection of AI and Gen Z. As digital natives, Gen Z students interact with AI daily, whether through personalized learning platforms, chatbots, or recommendation algorithms. Fabian and I shared our thoughts on how the rapid expansion of AI and its constant updates can be overwhelming—not just for tech enthusiasts but for all of humanity. People like Fabian are passionate about educating the world on AI with a vision of equality, ensuring both consumers and creators can thrive in this evolving landscape.

TMN’s Future of Media Discussion

Covering SXSW EDU as a TMN media creator, this session was the highlight of my day. Attending TMN’s Future of Media discussion was not just an opportunity to learn—it was a defining moment that reinforced why platforms like TMN are essential in today’s media landscape. Pablo Herrera, the founder of TMN, led a thought-provoking discussion on how digital platforms are transforming public discourse, reshaping education, and creating new opportunities for young content creators. This session showcased why TMN’s mission is so important—to empower youth, amplify their voices, and provide real-world experiences like this one. Without TMN, I wouldn’t be here covering SXSW EDU, engaging with industry leaders, and being part of this critical conversation about the future of media.

LEGO Education: Learning Through Play

One of the most exciting exhibits I visited was the LEGO Education Center. Seeing how LEGO is revolutionizing hands-on learning was truly inspiring. The interactive setups showcased creative ways to teach STEM subjects through play and problem-solving, reinforcing the idea that education can be both fun and impactful.

Interviewing Young Innovators in Literacy & Media

Another incredible experience was attending the Featured Session: Three Innovators Discuss Books, Media, & Entrepreneurship, where I had the chance to interview Alexandra Brown Chang, Annabelle Chang, and Raegan Revord. These young innovators are using their entrepreneurial efforts to expand literacy, storytelling, and a shared love of books. Their passion for promoting diverse voices and leveraging social media to connect readers worldwide was truly inspiring. Speaking with them was a fantastic experience, and I’m excited to share our conversation.
